Solid Central Team Off to 10-3 Start

The Central High Wildcats are off to an outstanding start to the 2020-2021 basketball season with a 10-3 record. They are right off a big win against McKinley.

Now the Wildcats have to walk through “killer’s row” and face one highly-ranked powerhouse team after another. It’s all as head coach Sid Edwards hoped it would go. His talented, senior-led team needs to face the best in the run up to the State 5A High School Playoffs.

The heat begins this Friday night at Central when last year’s semi-finalist Catholic High comes to Central.

Powerhouse Liberty High (formerly Lee) comes to Central Jan. 27. Back-to-back State Division I champion Scotlandville arrives Feb. 9. Then it’s defending 5A State champion Walker at Walker on Feb. 12.

District 4-5A district rival Zachary, ranked No. 2 in the state, will host the Wildcats Feb. 16.

In between all of this, Central will face a host of hungry rivals including Denham Springs, Live Oak, and East St. John.

Coach Sid, who also serves as Athletic Director and head football coach, said this year’s Wildcats are fun to watch.“They are continuously up and down the court. It’s an up tempo game. There is a focus on defense.”

PLAYER NOTES: Rylan Walker, a complete player, good 3-point shot and good at the goal.  Malik Hillard, played WR in football, inside/out, a soft shot. Cameron Young, good shooter and around goal. Tommy Zheng, a balanced player on offense and defense. Very stable. Gage Evans, hard-nosed defense, can score, brings lots of spirit. Daniel Rizan, legitimate 7-footer, gained 20 pounds, great basketball future.  Juan Banks, suffered football injury, talented on the court. Sam Meirs, a great story, former manager, worked hard and made team, scored six Monday. Malachi James, high hopes for this freshman who started once, high basketball IQ, super special. Daniel Carney and Dillon Butler, role players capable of coming off bench and maintaining quality of team’s play.
