Central City News Names All-Central Team

By Woody Jenkins

CENTRAL — The Central City News has named 29 high school football players to the 6th Annual All-Central football team.

The team includes students who play for Central High and Central Private as well as students who reside in Central, regardless of the high school they attend.  This year’s team includes 11 players from Central High, 10 from Central Private, four from Redemptorist, three from Catholic, and one from Parkview.

The All-Central team automatically includes all players who were named 1st team All-District in their respective leagues.

Central High head coach Doug Dotson was named Central’s Coach of the Year.  He was also named Coach of the Year in District 5-5A.

In addition to the 29 All-Central selections, the Central City News named 14 players as Most Valuable Players.  J. R. Richardson of Central High was selected the overall MVP of the All-Central team.  Richardson, who can play at virtually any position on offense or defense, was also District 5-5A MVP.  He is being courted by a number of major college football programs and recently visited the University of Michigan.

The team’s Offensive MVP is Kyle Cedotal of Redemptorist.  A former St. Alphonsus player, Cedotal passed for 1,586 yards and 19 TD’s and had only four interceptions.  He also ran for 166 yards and one TD.

The team’s Defensive MVP is Cooper Moore of Central High.  Moore, a spark plug for the entire defense, was a top performer for Central High’s District Championship team.

MVP Outstanding Student Athlete Drewe Burns of Redemptorist had 120 tackles, seven sacks, one interception, and a 4.0 grade point average.  Austin Watts of Central High is the MVP Best All Around Athlete. Able to play any position on the field, his punting was particularly spectacular.  He had zero punt return yards for the entire season.  MVP Special Teams Matt Thibodeaux of Central High won games with his field goals and kept opponents forever in the hole with consistently deep kickoffs.

MVP Defensive Back Trevor Sansone of Central High is an enormous threat on offense or defense.  The fastest man in State 5-5A football, he should be on the field the entire game.  Maybe one water break.

MVP Linebacker Chuck Conrad of Central Private was Defensive Player of the Year in his District.  MVP Running Back Scott Salinas of Catholic ran for 729 yards and caught 25 passes for 283 yards for a total of 17 TD’s.

MVP Receivers Lance Wicker of CPS and Jarren Pickering of Redemptorist posted solid numbers.  MVP Defensive Linemen Taylor Jenkins of Central and Grant Venable of Catholic are Division I prospects, as is MVP Offensive Lineman Patrick Hale of Redemptorist.
