Central Football Is Back

The Central High Wildcats are off to a fast start with high-scoring victories in the jamboree, a 28-6 win over Livonia, and the first game of the year, a 50-7 victory over Mentorship Academy.

Central coach Sid Edwards was beaming this week over the start of the season but even more because of his new granddaughter, Audriana, who came this week — three weeks early but still weighing a healthy 8 pounds, two ounces. Audriana came after 46 hours of labor and everyone was more than happy to see her. “A beautiful girl!’ he said.

The Central Wildcats travel to Broadmoor this Friday to meet a team that is stronger than Mentorship. Coach Cyril Crutchfield who won state championships at South Plaquemines High School is coaching the Buccaneers and hopes to turn around their fortunes.

Coach Sid was disappointed with the Wildcats’ first half of play against Mentorship Academy. “The team was struggling to get their footing, but they came on strong in the third quarter, scoring 43 points.”

The starting backfield against Broadmoor looks like this: Quarterback Sam Kenerson, a reliable playmaker, is healthy for Friday’s game as is Pierce Patterson. Isaiah Rankins will return to the lineup after an injury, but Jonathan Swift is out with an injury.

Homecoming will be next Friday, Sept. 20 against Belaire, which dropped to 4-A this year.

The following week, Central will meet Southern Lab. They are formidable. “The real deal!” Coach Sid said.

The coach had praise for his Wildcats. “They have a lot of poise and understanding. In terms of responding to coaching, one of our best teams!”

Coach Sid said he was grateful for the community’s support at the Mentorship game for the family of senior Lauryn Adams who passed away this summer. “Such a tragedy.”

Coach Sid had congratulations for Central Private, which won their first regular season game in LHSAA.

“It’s an exciting time for CPS.”
