Central Opens Playoffs at West Monroe

Central High School enters the first round of the state 5A football playoffs Friday at 7 p.m against the state’s No. 1-ranked team, the West Monroe Rebels (10-0).

The two teams last met in the 2013 playoffs when Central won 14-0 in one of great victories in Central football history.  West Monroe has one of the state’s premier football programs, in the same category as John Curtis, Evangel, Acadiana, and Notre Dame of Crowley. They are a perennial contender and always outstanding.

This year’s Rebel team features two quarterbacks who run the veer option.  Unlike many West Monroe teams, this one is good at throwing, which brings an added dimension.

Upfront, West Monroe has a 6’7” 399-pound lineman who can run.  Is that 399 pounds before or after he ate his biscuits?

Central Coach Sid Edwards said his team’s greatest strength is that they believe in each other and love each other.  “They are more fun to coach than any team I’ve had,” Coach Sid said.  “Their greatest attribute is each other.  The play together as one.  They genuinely like each other.  Many of these young men have been playing football together since they were six.”

Coach Sid urged Central fans to travel to West Monroe.  “You should leave no later than 1:30 p.m. and go through Natchez.”
