Amendment No. 2 Protects Worship Services

Louisiana voters can go to the polls on Saturday, Oct. 14 and make sure that no governor can ever again order the closing of churches to in-person worship services.   Amendment No. 2 by Sen. Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) authored the measure, which passed both houses of the Louisiana Legislature with a two-thirds vote.

If voters approve it on Saturday, Oct. 14, it will become part of the Louisiana Constitution and provide clear protection against the kind of edicts made by Gov. John Bel Edwards during the Covid pandemic.

The amendment does not alter the Freedom of Religion provisions of the state constitution.  In fact, it would not be in the Declaration of Rights but in the General Provisions section of the constitution.

It says, “The freedom to worship in a church or other place of worship is a fundamental right that is worthy of the highest order of protection.”  Any action that attempts to violate that right will be subject to “strict scrutiny” by the courts.  For further information, email centralcitynews@hotmail.com.
