Massive Early Voting Favors Democrats

Early voters are going to the polls in record numbers across the state this week as a preliminary to the Nov. 16 runoff.

A total of 162,368 voters cast ballots on Saturday, Nov. 2 and Monday, Nov. 4. This was far more than the 122,638 who voted in the first two days of early voting for the Oct. 12 primary. In addition, the voters were far more Democratic than Republican and had a significantly larger percentage of African American voters than in the primary. Analysts see the early voting trend in the runoff as strongly favoring incumbent Gov. John Bel Edwards.

In Baton Rouge, the East Baton Rouge Parish Council on Aging has hauled record numbers of voters from the inner city to early voting sites. If voting continues at this pace and in these proportions, incumbent Gov. John Bel Edwards could have a significant lead by the end of early voting.
