GOP Says Monique Has Best Chance To Defeat Cleo Fields in 6th District
The Republican Party of East Baton Rouge Parish held a news conference last week endorsing Monique Appeaning for the Republican nomination for United States Congress from the 6th District of Louisiana.
Republican and no party voters can go to the polls Saturday, May 16 to select the Republican nominee who will face incumbent Democratic Congressman Cleo Fields in the general election Nov. 3.
Parish Republican chairman Woody Jenkins said the race in the 6th District could have far-reaching national consequences.
“Congressman Cleo Fields is considered by many to be unbeatable, but we believe that is far from true. Two years ago, he only won 50.8 percent of the vote. Our candidate, former Sen. Elbert Guillory, ran a strong race and won eight of the 11 parishes in the district. However, he could not quite unlock Congressman Fields’ hold on Democratic voters,” Jenkins said.
“We think we have a superb candidate in Monique Appeaning. She is a strong conservative, especially on fiscal responsibility and family values, but she also has a strong appeal among Democratic voters.”
“Amazingly, in the 214-year history of Louisiana, we have never had an African American woman represent Louisiana in Congress.”
“Almost 60 percent of Cleo’s support comes from black females, but it is the Republican candidate who can make the best appeal to them.”
“Congressman Fields won the election in East Baton Rouge by 40,000 votes but lost the rest of the district. Sen. Elbert Guillory is from St. Landry and was not well known in Baton Rouge.”
“However, Monique’s outstanding professional career of more than 25 years is based in Baton Rouge. She rose to being Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Administration, among the important positions she has held. She has her bachelors and masters degrees in public administration from Southern University and is a Lifetime member of the Southern Alumni Association. She is well connected and well respected in Baton Rouge. And she has a lifetime of experience of living in our state as an African American woman.”
Ms. Appeaning is the founder and president of the St. George Republican Women’s Club.
Monique’s platform stresses family values, low taxes, strong defense, fighting crime, and free enterprise.
