BRCC Plans Helicopter Training Here

Monique Cross, vice chancellor for academic affairs at Baton Rouge Community College, said Tuesday the college will begin helicopter maintenance training classes at a facility on Hooper Road beginning in August.
Cross told the Central City Council it will be just the first of the training programs which will be coming to Central.
BRCC offers an associate degree in the Applied Science of Helicopter Pilot Operations.
Central city administrator David Barrow said there is only one other training facility of this type east of the Mississippi River.
Cross predicted the helicopter training program in Central would attract about 100 students.  She said BRCC will offer other satellite classes in Central over the coming months, most likely in automobile mechanics and airplane mechanics.  She said the college would also like to explore expanding its relationship with Central High School.
She said that within five years as many as 2,000 students could be attending junior college classes in Central.
BRCC describes its program as follows: “Baton Rouge Community College now offers an Associate of Applied Science in Helicopter Pilot Operations.  In partnership with Guidance Aviation, an award-winning collegiate helicopter flight training organization, this degree program is VA Chapter 33 benefits approved for eligible U.S. Military Veterans utilizing their Post 9/11 GI bill benefits.  Graduates of this program will earn their Associate of Applied Science degree as well as become Certificated Flight Instructors with instrument rating, necessary to start their careers as professional helicopter pilots.”
According to the BRCC website, persons interested in applying for the program should contact Shondra Johnson, coordinator for technical education at 225-216-8289 or aviation@mybrcc.edu.

Baton Rouge Community College is an open admissions, two-year post-secondary community college.
