One Baton Rouge Planning Push at Metro Council in January: Traigle

BATON ROUGE — With the election of Mayor President Kip Holden and a new Metro Council, gay rights leaders plan a new push to pass an ordinance codifying recognition of gays, bisexuals, and trans gender people.  In an email to newly-elected members of the Metro Council, One Baton Rouge leader and gay rights activist Joe Traigle said his organization will present the proposed One Baton Rouge Equality Resolution Ordinance for Council consideration by Jan. 15.  Traigle said it is “basically the same as the ordinances that exist in the cities that the Mayor and BRAC have canvassed.”  Traigle said Baton Rouge has been named the 4th worst city in the U.S. for gays.  Baton Rouge reportedly has the highest rate of AIDS in the country.

The ordinance failed to pass by one vote during the past term of the Council.  It is supported by a variety of liberal groups and opposed by the Louisiana Family Forum and some churches.
