Taxpayers May Expedite Refund of CATS Tax by Filing Protest by Dec. 31

BATON ROUGE — Property taxpayers inside the City of Baton Rouge may be able to expedite of a refund of the CATS property tax if payment of the tax “under protest” is made before Dec. 31, 2012.

The constitutionality of the tax is being challenged in the case of Graugnard v. CATS.  However, if the suit is successful, the taxes collected will already have been spent. But by filing the attached letter, a taxpayer’s tax payment made be set aside and be unavailable for CATS to spend.  This could make it available for refund, depending on court rulings in the case.
