Remembering Coach Lawrence Meares

Coach Lawrence H. Meares went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at the age of 96. Larry, resident of Slaughter, La., was born on Jan, 29, 1928, to Hurschel and May Meares. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Victoria Bergeron Meares; two daughters, Debby Brian and husband Randy, and Leslie Lofton and husband Mike; four grandchildren; Kelli Brian Cox, Erin Lofton Cain, John Lawrence Brian, Amy Lofton Hall; eight great-grandchildren, Mason Cox, Stratton Cain, Britton Brian, Emery Cox, Stella Cain, Bowen Brian, Silas Cain and Eli Hall; brother-in-law, Victor Bergeron, Jr. 

He was preceded in death by parents, Hurschel and May Meares, brother Hurschel (Jug) Meares, and brother-in-law Leon Bergeron. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in the 151st. Paratroopers Airborne Division. 

He was a graduate of Istrouma High School, Southeastern Louisiana University and received a Masters+30 from LSU. He was a longtime educator beginning his career as a history teacher and coach and finishing his 45-year career as an elementary school principal. 

He was dedicated to his community and served as an East Feliciana Police Juror. He attended Redwood Baptist Church in Slaughter. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family at his lake home in Arkansas and dancing with his Cajun friends in Breaux Bridge. He was a man of remarkable abilities and a quick, colorful wit who will be greatly missed. 

Visitation was at Charlet Funeral Home in Zachary on Friday, March 1, 2024. Burial was in Redwood Cemetery, Slaughter, conducted by Chaplain Michael Mann. 

Pallbearers were his sons-in-law Randy Brian and Mike Lofton, grandson, John Brian, grandsons-in-law Marshall Cain, Brian Hall and Joe Cox. Honorary pallbearer was Mart Bickham.
