$6.5 Million on Road Projects Since 2019

Mayor David Barrow says more than $6.5 million has been spent on city road projects in Central since 2019.  This is the most spent by any administration since creation of the City of Central, he said.

Another $18 million in city road projects is in the planning stage, he said.  Funding for these projects comes from the parish’s ½-cent sales tax and from funds collected from franchise fees.

He listed road rehabilitation projects in the following neighborhoods since 2019:

•Willowbrook Drive

•Frenchtown Road

•Huntley Place

•Planchet Road south of Thib-

odeaux Road

•Comite Hills West entrance

•Central Square

•Northeast Drive

•Oakberry Road

•Village at Magnolia Square

•Wisteria Lakes

•Magnolia Blossom

•Lovett Road roundabout, and other smaller areas.

A major $1 million+ project completed in 2021 was the reconstruction of Thibodeaux Road.  This project involved widening the roadway on each side to allow for larger travel lanes, curve safety improvements, new larger cross drain structures, and a complete rehab of the road base and surface.  Prior to this, the roadway had narrow lanes and tighter curves which sometimes led to crashes.  Since the new roadway has been in place, accidents caused by the condition of the roadway have decreased to almost none, Barrow said.

A current $2.5 million street rehab program is underway on roadways within

•Bellingrath Hills

•Bellingrath Lakes

• Village Lakes

•Hampton Village

•Comite Hills.

This project is expected to be completed by November.   Rehab projects planned for 2023 include streets in

•Indian Mound

•Plantation Way

•Central Woods

•Central City

•McCullough Road

•Morgan Place, and other individual streets.

Major local projects currently in the planning stages include:

•Intersection improvements at Morgan Road and Greenwell Springs Road ($2.5 million).  Expected construction in 2024. Engineering work has started.

•Intersection improvements at Joor Road at Sullivan Road ($2.5 million).  Expected construction in 2025.

•Planchet Road improvements from Frenchtown Road to Thibodeaux Road ($1 million).  Expected construction 2024.  Engineering planning is underway.

•Hubbs Road improvements and intersection at Denham Road ($5 million).  Expected construction 2025.

•Frenchtown Rd improvements from Planchet Road to Frenchtown Acres. ($1 million).  Expected construction 2024.

•Wax Rd extension from Central Square to Hooper Rd. ($6 million shared funding with state of LA).  Expected construction 2025/2026.

Mayor Barrow said he can be reached at 225-246-2306 to discuss funding, expenditures, and the planned projects if anyone has questions.
