Mayor Barrow on Projects for Central

In the 2022 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature, thanks to the leading efforts of Senator Bodi White, the legislature approved over $75 million worth of projects for Central and with other parish projects in our area, the total goes up to over $111 million.  The projects are as follows:

Roadwork. Hooper Road extension Planning and Widening (Sullivan Road to Greenwell Springs Road) — $8,398,500.  This funding is for the necessary planning to widen Hooper Road to four lanes between Sullivan Road and Greenwell Springs Road.   Actual construction funding is to be at a later date.

LA 3034 (Wax Road) Spur —  $6 million.  This funding is to continue Wax Road from the dead-end in Central Square to Hooper Road just east of Shoe Creek Drive.  This project has been on the city’s Master Transportation Plan and will serve as a bypass road for Sullivan Road.

Sullivan Road widening — $15,610,300.  This funding secures the necessary costs for the actual road widening project between Wax Road and Hooper Road, including intersection work at Sullivan and Hooper.  DOTD has this project on the November 2022 letting schedule.

LA408 (Hooper Road widening and sewer improvements – Blackwater Road to Sullivan Road) — $29,765,000.  This funding will be combined with MovEBR parish funding to widen Hooper Road to four lanes and install new sewer lines.  The MovEBR program currently has this project set for bids in late 2023/early 2024.

Parks. BREC Hooper Road Sports Park — $186,389.  This funding will allow additional improvements to the park at Hooper Road and Lovett Road.  Recently all fields were turfed.

Central Community School System Autism Park — $500,000.  This new park will be for special-needs persons and will be located on the CCSS grounds.

Old Greenwell Springs Park Springs Restoration — $25,000.  This funding is to help restore the springs on the old Hospital property on Greenwell Springs Road north of Hooper Road.

Central Police Department Equipment/Vehicles — $500,000.  This funding will go towards the purchase of new vehicles and equipment for the CPD.

Buildings/Construction. City of Central Administration Building — $16,943.  This funding will go towards the planning and construction of a new City Hall building.  Additional funds may be appropriated next session.

Central Community School System Sports Complex — $700,000.  This funding will go towards additional improvements to the new CCSS Sports Complex at the corner of Sullivan Road and Hooper Road.

Central Athletic Foundation — $1.1 million.  This funding will be used towards athletic facility improvements at Central High School as well as the CCSS Sports Park if appropriate uses are determined.  

Pride Fire Department Indian Mound station — $820,000.  This funding will help replace the fire station in the front of Indian Mound subdivision with a new station.

Central Community School System Multi-Use Activity Center — $12 million.   This new center will include a covered arena/event complex that can seat up to 3,000 persons.

Central Chamber of Commerce. Central Chamber of Commerce — $50,000.  This funding will be used at the Chamber’s discretion for economic development purposes in the city.

EBR Parish Flood Control Projects. East Baton Rouge Parish Flood Control Project — $34,951,787.  This funding will help serve as a match on improvements to Beaver Bayou, Blackwater Bayou, Wards Creek, Jones Creek, and Bayou Fountain.

EBR Sheriff’s Office. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office/Drug Task Force/Human Trafficking — $1 million.  This funding will go towards fighting the drug/narcotics and human trafficking problems in East Baton Rouge Parish, including Central.
