Seven Supreme Court Justices Question Attorneys for Rev. Spell, DA, Governor

Louisiana’s Supreme Court has had many different personalities over the past 210 years, since the Supreme Court was created by the Louisiana Constitution of 1812.  Today the highest court in the state has a decidedly conservative flavor with small-town values.  There are five conservative Republicans, one liberal Democrat, and a Chief Justice who is not affiliated with a party.  The court’s newest member, Justice Piper Griffin is the only Democrat and also the pm;u member to come from a major city, New Orleans.  The other six come from small towns, the largest being Opelousas, home of Justice Jimmy Genovese.  Six of the seven graduated from the LSU Law School in Baton Rouge, while Genovese earned his law degree at Loyola Law School in New Orleans.  In some respects, this may be the most conservative Supreme Court in the state’s history.  Justices Jeff Hughes, Will Crain, Scott Crichton, Jay McCallum, and Jimmy Genovese are generally conservative, but they may surprise observers on any given issue.  The current court is the first in history to have a Republican majority.
