Central Stands for Flag

Last week, when it unexpectedly became controversial to sing the National Anthem at a Central High School pep rally, CHS students demonstrated where they stand — squarely in the corner of the red, white and blue!
At the national level, some NFL players were taking a knee when the National Anthem was played. But there had been no protests in Central. Furthermore, Central seemed like the last place such protests might occur, given the community’s deeply-held Christian faith, patriotism, and conservative politics.
But an unusual twist put Central in the center of the debate, if only for a few hours. Central pep rallies almost never include the National Anthem but a choir group was invited to perform the anthem at a pep rally. When principal David Prescott learned of the invitation — at the height of the NFL protests — he vetoed it, fearing it might bring Central High into the controversy. But the opposite happened. It was his decision that ignited controversy. The next morning, upset parents started coming to the school in protest.
The decision was quickly reversed. The anthem was performed at the pep rally, and the student body had their say by dressing in patriotic attire for the game!
