The Central City News has recognized 21 individuals who helped shape Central as we know it today. Leading the list is J.A. Smith, Central High principal who established standards of discipline and excellence that prevail today, principal Glen Gentry, and principal Ronnie Devall, who together guided the school and the community for 64 years.

Among others were Ralph Washington who defended the proposed Central school system against charges of racism at the state legislature and Robert Williams, the first black coach in Central history, who was instrumental in building goodwill in Central.

Those listed include:
• Founder Russell Starns guided Central through its creation and led the first school board.
• Sharon Browning led the board during construction of the Central school complex.
• James David and Claud Derbes keep Central going during times of great crisis. Businessman Gil Matherne responds to every important need.
