Graydon Walker: Treasure to Central
The City Council of Central honored Graydon Walker at its recent meeting for his long service. Former Mayor-President Tom Ed McHugh was on hand to honor his former CAO. The Council adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS, Mr. Graydon Walker has devoted most of his adult life to public service; and
WHEREAS, On September 21, 1928, parents Lee and Nellie Walker welcomed Graydon into the world in Minden, Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, at a young age, his family moved to what is now called Central, Louisiana, and lived in a home near the corner of Hooper Rd and Joor Rd; and
WHEREAS, Graydon graduated from Central High School and thereafter attended and graduated from Louisiana State University; and
WHEREAS, before serving overseas in the Korean War, he married Iris Elaine Shaffett; and later Graydon and Iris raised their only child, David Walker, in Central; and
WHEREAS, Graydon entered into a career in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System which included many positions such as teaching at Istrouma Junior High and Prescott Junior High as well as principal of Central High School for two years and other central office positions in the system; and
WHEREAS, Graydon moved up in the ranks serving as Assistant Superintendent of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System before becoming Superintendent of the East Feliciana Parish School System; and
WHEREAS, Graydon served as Chief Administrative Officer for the City-Parish of East Baton Rouge under Mayor Tom Ed McHugh for nearly 10 years and served on the East Baton Rouge Planning Commission as the mayor’s appointee; and
WHEREAS, upon incorporation of the City of Central, Graydon was appointed in 2005 by Mayor Mac Watts to the City of Central Planning & Zoning Commission, where he proudly served until 2019; and
WHEREAS, Graydon, a long time member of Zoar Baptist Church, has lived a quiet, daily life characterized by devotion to his faith, family, and friends, hard work, honesty, and humility, influencing countless people by his life of service to our country and community; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, that the City of Central hereby honors Graydon Walker as a treasure to this community for his exemplary life well lived and his impact on our community and parish.
