Old Central Middle School Demolition Nearly Complete

Old Central Middle School Demolition Nearly Complete

The demolition of buildings at the old Central Middle School at the corner of Hooper and Sullivan roads is nearly complete.  All of the buildings targeted for removal are now down except the 6th Grade Building, which should be down by Friday, according to Supt. Mike Faulk. It will take another week for all of the materials to be removed. The demolition plan does not include the L-shaped building, the Home Ec building, and the Industrial Arts building.  The future of the old girls gym is still being discussed by the school board.

Meanwhile, the superintendent is planning to seek a proposal that would allow the use of the area that has been cleared for parking for fans attending events at Wildcat Stadium.  The plan would allow the use of 30,000 to 40,000 square feet of cleared area.  Existing slabs and limestone would be used to form the base.  Parking at the stadium has been limited, especially in the rear of the stadium, which is often unusable because of poor drainage. The new parking area, which could be used until the school board decides on the future use of the old middle school site, would begin at the concession stand and tie in to the horseshoe area near Hooper and Sullivan.  The demolition contract is for just under $650,000.
