Wildcats to Open at Home

After a slow start at the Zachary Jamboree against Baker last Friday, the Central Wildcats glided to a 21-0 victory.  Starting quarterback Gabe Brown threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to James Schoppe in the first half.

In the second half, quarterback Ralph Moore threw a 15-yard TD pass to Schoppe and a 32-yard pass to Terrell Chapman at the three.  Tenth grade running back Xavier Lewis pushed in from there for the TD.  The Wildcats held Baker to four rushing yards.

This Friday, Central will host Kipp Renaissance Academy of New Orleans at Wildcat Stadium in Central.  Kipp, a public charter school in New Orleans, defeated Sophie B. Wright 16-12 last Friday in the Warren Easton Jamboree at Pan American Stadium.

Central is the defending District 4-5A champion but has only four returning starters from the 2013 squad which lost only one regular season game last year,  Central will play Morgan City on Sept. 12.

One of the biggest games of the season will come the following week when Central travels to New Orleans to play Jesuit, the team responsible for Central’s only regular season lost last year.

The Jesuit game begins a five-week test of strength for Central.  After Jesuit, the Wildcats will face in succession McKinley, Scotlandville, Denham Springs, and Zachary.  Scotlandville and Zachary return almost all of their starters from last season, when Scotlandville lost to Central by only one point and Zachary made it to the quarterfinals.

The lack of game experience for most of the team left coach Sid Edwards puzzled about who could carry the water for this year’s team but the jamboree, which is not counted as an official game, should have answered some of those questions.

Central has won six straight District 4-5A championships.  To win this year, they wil have to do it with an inexperienced group of athletes who believe they can.
