Transgender Ordinance Ignores Rights of Majority

The Progressive Social Network and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber were planning a push last week to amend the Parish Plan of Government and pass an ordinance to enact special rights for the LGBTQ movement that would impinge on the rights of other citizens.

The legislation would have had many consequences including such bizarre practices as allowing men who consider themselves women to have access to public rest rooms for women. Thanks to an outpouring of public opposition, the proposed changes have been put on hold by the authors and were not introduced at the Metro Council as planned.

Gene Mills of the Louisiana Family Forum, which mobilized pastors and churches on the issue, released the following statement:

“A Metro Council Committee was expected to introduce sexual orientation gender identity (SOGI) provisions in the amended plan of Government and an ordinance was being drafted that would create special status based on sexual behavior and form a Human Rights Commission to review alleged discrimination in every aspect of community life such as public accommodations, housing, and employment.”

“The response was overwhelming. I would like to thank everyone who communicated with the Metro Council, forwarded the LFF Family Facts email to friends and family, or shared the information on social media. You made your voices heard respectfully and effectively.”

“I am pleased to report that neither of these objectionable measures was placed on the Metro Council agenda for the meeting on Wednesday, July 24! The supporters of introducing sexual politics into parish government are determined to continue their efforts.”

When asked for comment, Metro Council member Tara Wicker said, “Policies that only further divide us as a community and a country are counterproductive to true progress. I am thankful to God and humbled that once again, our city has said no to this type of measure.”

We applaud Council member Wicker for her firm stand and other members of the Council who resisted this effort. However, we are sure it will return another day.
