If Mayor Dies or Goes To Jail, Mayor Pro-Tem Becomes New Mayor

Under Louisiana law, if the Mayor of a city resigns, dies or is convicted of a felony, he is removed from office and succeeded by the Mayor Pro-Tem of the city.
Mayor candidate David Barrow was arrested in April 2017 in connection with a forged signature on a city contract. District Attorney Hillar Moore told the Central City News in July that the Barrow case is still under active investigation. The warrant was issued as a result of an investigation by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s office.
