Rep. Hodges Passes Landmark Flood Plan Bill

Rep. Valarie Hodges (R-Central) authored landmark legislation during the recent Regular Session that could have a dramatic effect on preventing future flooding not only in East Baton Rouge Parish but throughout Louisiana.
HB 691, which is awaiting the governor’s signature, requires the state to establish a comprehensive statewide floodplain management plan to be established by a new commission chaired by the Secretary of the Louisiana Department of
Transportation and Development.
The commission will be responsible for establishing a statewide flood information database. That database will in turn be used to systematically review flood and drainage problems in each area of the state.
The commission will review flood and drainage proposals across the state with a view toward making sure that a project in one parish does not worsen flooding in another.
The commission will be responsible for maintaining flood basins that cross parish lines and specifically for clearing and de-snagging the Amite and Comite rivers.
Hodges’ bill passed the House 91-4 and the Senate 34-0.
