Road Construction Projects in Central

Road Construction Projects in Central

Elected officials in Central are rallying around a set of proposed infrastructure improvements that could revolutionize traffic patterns and safety on Central’s major thoroughfares.
The four road projects are
•    Widen Hooper Road from Blackwater to Joor and then to Sullivan
•    Extend Hooper Road across the Amite River to Hwy. 16 in Watson
•    Finish Sullivan Road all the way to the Central School Complex
•    Widen Greenwell Springs Road from the old hospital to the Central Thruway.
Central Mayor Jr. Shelton said he fully supports the projects, as do members of the Central City Council and members of Central Legislative Delegation.
All of the projects have some degree of funding for studies or even partial construction in place, but none of them is fully funded.
Sen. Bodi White is playing a leading role in getting the projects included in the Capital Outlay Bill.
Rep. Barry Ivey is pushing for funding of a study on the widening of Greenwell Springs Road.
On other projects, Rep. Valarie Hodges is working to get the Corps of Engineers and DOTD to move forward expeditiously on the Comite River Diversion Canal.
White is also working for funding for Central City Hall, Phase II of the new BREC park, and demotion of the old Greenwell Springs hospital.
