Central to Re-Initiate Incorporation Petition. Because of an error in the original incorporation petition, Gov. Blanco has challenged the legality of the petition.  As a result, Russell Starns urged citizens to begin the petition process again in order to cure the fatal flaw, expedite the process, and try to get the incorporation referendum on the April 23 ballot.

Chalmette, You Are Not Alone! This Saturday, Central will hold Cookin’ for Our Neighbors, hoping to raise $100,000 to help  the people of Chalmette, which was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Central School Board Sworn In. Gov. Kathleen Blanco has appointed the seven members of the first-ever Central Community School Board — Morris Anderson, Sharon Watts Browning, Willard Easley, Ruby Foil, Dr. Jim Gardner, Marty Guilbeau, and Russell Starns.  The board elected Starns as chairman.

Rep.-elect Cliff Richardson to Be Sworn in Jan 14. Richardson, owner of Rebel Electric and long-time justice of the peace, will replace Rep. Donald Ray Kennard, who is retiring after 36 years in the House.

Supt. Mike Faulk has been named Central’s Man of the Year.

Time of Unprecedented Growth with 29 Major Projects Underway. Some of the projects are Central Thruway, Joor Road, Village at Magnolia Square, Senior Living, Amber Lakes, Burlington Lakes, Village Lakes, Wisteria Lakes, Morgan Springs, 4th filing of  Bellingrath Lakes, Woodstock, 4th filing of Hampton Village, Mia’s Corner, Acadiana retail (Sullivan at Wax), Sammy’s, Central Office Plaza, Medical Center, First Student, and Custom Metal.

Central School Board to Consider Purchasing 83 Acres on Sullivan Road to Build New School Complex. Supt. Mike Faulk recommends the site just north of Hooper Road for a new middle school and a new elementary school.

Qualifying will open Feb. 3 for municipal election for Mayor and City Council.

New Central School Board Sworn In. New members Jim Lloyd and Roxanne Atkinson replace incumbents Russell Starns and Marty Guilbeau.

Central’s Todd McClure will start his 144th straight game as center for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL playoffs.

City Council Says No to BR Loop. The City Council voted 3-2 to block the Baton Rouge Loop from passing through Central.  Voting Yes were Councilmen Tony LoBue, Wayne Messina, and Mayor Pro-Tem Ralph Washington.  Voting No were Councilmen Louis DeJohn and Aaron Moak.

A three-judge panel of the 1st Circuit of Appeal heard a suit by the Central City News against CH2MHill for access to public records of the City of Central.

Two Candidates Seek House Seat Held by Rep. Clif Richardson. Metro Councilman Scott Wilson and businessman Barry Ivey will be candidates in a special election March 2.

Former Sheriff Greg Phares recommends four weapons for homeowners self-defense — AR-15 rifle, short-barrel shotgun, Glock handgun, and .38 revolver.

One Year Ago • Jan. 9, 2014

Jr. Shelton to Seek Mayor’s Post After 51-49 Loss Four Years Ago. Mayor Mac Watts is not seeking reelection.  The election is April 5.  So far, only James Salsbury has said he will seek Police Chief.
